2002 was the year of commemoration of the 150-th anniversary since the birthday of the well-known mathematician A. P. Kiselyov whose life was dedicated to teaching Math and creating secondary school textbooks which were employed in from 1884 to 1960.

In 1875 after graduating from the university A. P. Kiselyov came to Voronezh to work as teacher of Maths, Mechanics and Technical Drawing in Voronezh Technical High School. From 1891 to 1901 he was a teacher at Voronezh Cadet School. Teaching Mathematics was the main cause of his life. A.P. Kiselyov prepared for his classes very carefully. His colleagues and students admired the exactness of his definitions, a very effective and learner centered approach to elucidate the material and arrange its acquisition. The dedicated teacher did his best for everybody in his class to make progress in learning whatever their abilities for Physics and Maths could be. His careful and systematic work resulted in creating a number of resource materials which were so helpful for teaching at secondary schools. In 1884 he published his first textbook “A Systematic Course of Arithmetis for Secondary Schools”, which laid down his principle of exact definitions, clear reasoning and brief description. It was followed by a number of textbooks adhering to the same principle to become used in all the secondary schools of Russia. The author awarded with the Order of St. Stanislav and St. Anna for his teaching and research retired in 1901.

The retired teacher didn’t stop improving his old textbooks and writing new ones. He usually took part in the Congresses of Scientists. Being interested in the experience of his colleagues A.P. Kiselyov collected a big library of books in Mathematics. To be aware of the work of foreign teachers he went abroad very often.
The most fruitful 45 years of Kiselyov’s life were spent in Voronezh, where his talent of a teacher was realized and recognized.

In addition to his successful teaching he was famous for his charities and social activities. Enlightening the masses A. P. Kiselyov delivered very exciting lectures on the most urgent issues of contemporary science and wrote articles for scientific journals.

After the October Revolution A. P. Kiselyov resumed teaching and continued developing textbooks and resource materials in St. Petersburg. “I’m working again and that’s why I feel happy”, he wrote to his son Sergei who had emigrated abroad. His books remained in use in all the secondary schools in the USSR. In 1933 A. P. Kiselyov received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. At the age of 88 he died and was buried near the grave of D.I.Mendeleyev in Volkov Cemetery in St. Petersburg.
